داستان فيلم در مورد ساکنان يک منطقه کوچک در امريکاست که دچار يک بيماري وحشتناک ديوانگي واگيردار و پس از آن مرگ مي شوند . آب منطقه بر اثر ورود سم بيماري آلوده مي شود و تمام مردم براي ادامه بقا و زنده ماندن تلاش مي کنند.ديويد داتون( تيمووي آليپوند) کلانتر منطقه تلاش مي کند تا شرايط را بهبود ببخشد و همسرش جودي ( رادا ميچل )که پزشک منطقه است در اين راه به او کمک مي کند اما سرانجام جودي نيز به ديوانگي مشکوک مبتلا مي شود ولي ديويد باز هم اميدوار است و ....
